For US and UK managers and HR professionals, tracking employee skills is essential to workforce development. A skills gap can lead to inefficiencies, reduced productivity, and missed business goals. Understanding these gaps is the first step in creating targeted training programs and improving employee performance.
This tool allows you to quickly assess current skills against ideal or required competencies. Whether you're looking at an individual or an entire team, identifying skill gaps empowers you to make data-driven decisions on training, hiring, and career development planning.
How the calculation works
The Skills Gap Calculator uses a simple but effective comparison of current employee skills against required or target skills for a role or team. The formula is as follows: Skills Gap = (Required Skill Level) - (Current Skill Level).
Each skill is scored on a scale from 1 to 5, where 5 is the highest level of proficiency. The calculator will then determine the difference between the current skill level and the ideal or required level. These differences are aggregated to produce an overall skills gap report for individuals or teams.
For team calculations, the tool averages these gaps across all team members to give an overall team skills gap score. This approach provides a clear view of where the most significant training needs lie and helps prioritize professional development efforts.
