Frequently Asked Questions

What should a job offer letter include?

A complete offer letter includes: job title, start date, compensation (base + bonus), benefits summary, employment type, work location, at-will statement, confidentiality reference, background check condition, offer expiry date, and signature block. Executive offers add equity terms and severance provisions.

What is the difference between an offer letter and an employment contract?

An offer letter summarises key terms and invites acceptance. An employment contract is a more detailed legal agreement governing the full relationship. In the US, most at-will roles use offer letters. In the UK, EU, and many other jurisdictions, a detailed written statement of employment particulars is legally required.

How long should a candidate have to accept an offer?

Standard: 3–5 business days for IC/mid-level roles. Executive roles: 5–7 days. Shorter windows create unnecessary pressure. Longer than 2 weeks leaves your process exposed. Brief extensions of 1–2 days for competing offers are reasonable.

Can I rescind a job offer after it has been accepted?

In US at-will states, conditional offers can typically be rescinded before the start date, but this creates legal exposure if the candidate has relied on it (e.g., resigned). In the UK and EU, rescinding an accepted offer without cause can lead to breach of contract claims. Always consult employment counsel before rescinding any accepted offer.
