How to customize this financial analyst job description
1. Name the finance function precisely
FP&A analyst, corporate development analyst, accounting analyst, investment analyst, and treasury analyst are distinct roles requiring different skills. Be explicit about the function. Vague "financial analyst" postings attract candidates from all finance backgrounds — many of whom will be disappointed when they learn the actual role scope.
2. Specify modeling depth required
An analyst who builds three-statement models from scratch is different from one who maintains existing spreadsheet models. Describe the complexity: "You'll build monthly P&L forecast models integrating headcount, revenue, and COGS inputs across 5 business units" is actionable. "Financial modeling experience required" is not.
3. List your ERP and reporting tools
Finance professionals strongly self-select based on ERP familiarity. NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, and QuickBooks each represent different company stages and complexity. Naming your actual tools saves interview time and attracts analysts who will be productive from day one rather than spending months learning a new system.
4. Describe stakeholder exposure
Finance analysts at different companies have wildly different levels of executive exposure. A senior analyst presenting to the board quarterly is different from one who only produces reports for a senior finance manager. High executive exposure is a meaningful career development signal that attracts ambitious candidates willing to work at a demanding pace.

Frequently asked questions
What should a financial analyst job description include? +
A financial analyst job description should specify the finance function (FP&A, corporate finance, investment analysis, accounting, treasury), the reporting structure (who they report to and which business units they support), required modeling skills (three-statement models, DCF, LBO, scenario analysis, budgeting), tools and systems (Excel/Google Sheets at what level, ERP systems like SAP/Oracle/NetSuite, FP&A tools like Anaplan or Adaptive Insights), required certifications (CFA, CPA — required vs. preferred), the analysis output format (board presentations, management reporting packages, ad-hoc analysis), and whether this is primarily a model-building role or a reporting and maintenance role. Being specific about all of these dimensions dramatically improves candidate quality.
What is the average financial analyst salary in the US in 2026? +
Financial analyst salaries in the US in 2026 range from $65,000 for entry-level roles to $145,000+ for senior analysts at investment banks, private equity, or large corporations. Entry-level financial analysts (0–2 years) earn $65,000–$85,000. Mid-level analysts (3–5 years, strong Excel/modeling, CPA/CFA progress) earn $85,000–$110,000. Senior financial analysts and FP&A leads (6+ years, executive presentations, team leadership) earn $110,000–$145,000. Investment banking analysts earn $100,000–$130,000 base with significant year-end bonus. Private equity and hedge fund analysts can earn $150,000–$300,000+ in total compensation. CPA and CFA certifications typically command 10–20% salary premiums over uncertified peers.
How do I write a financial analyst job description that attracts top candidates? +
The best financial analyst job descriptions are clear about what kind of financial work the analyst will do: is this building forecasting models from scratch, maintaining monthly reporting packages, doing ad-hoc business case analysis, or supporting M&A transactions? Strong finance candidates specialize and want to work in their area of strength. Describe the sophistication of the financial models, the frequency and audience of presentations, and whether this is a growth path toward finance manager or controller. Include information about the company's financial system maturity — analysts evaluating a company using Excel for everything have different expectations than those joining a Anaplan or Workday environment. Mentioning the CFO's management style and the finance team culture also helps differentiate your posting from hundreds of similar ones.
