How to customize this project manager job description

1. Specify the project domain

IT project manager, construction project manager, marketing project manager, and software project manager are entirely different roles. Naming the domain upfront saves everyone time. Include the types of deliverables: software releases, infrastructure upgrades, campaign launches, or facility builds.

2. State methodology and tools explicitly

Agile/Scrum PMs and Waterfall PMs operate very differently. Listing the actual tools (Jira, Monday, MS Project, Smartsheet) also helps candidates self-select. If PMP or CSM certification is mandatory, put it in required qualifications — not nice-to-have — to prevent large volumes of unqualified applications.

3. Include project scale metrics

Budget size, team size, and number of concurrent projects are key seniority signals. "$500K average project budget, 3–5 concurrent projects, cross-functional teams of 8–15" gives candidates a concrete picture. This prevents mismatches where a program manager applies for a coordinator role, or vice versa.

4. Define client-facing vs. internal

Client-facing project management (consulting, agencies, professional services) requires very different soft skills than internal IT or operations PM roles. Client-facing PMs need strong commercial awareness and relationship management skills. Internal PMs need cross-departmental influence skills. Be explicit about which you need.

Frequently asked questions

What should a project manager job description include? +

A project manager job description should specify the type and scale of projects managed (budget size, team size, duration), the methodology used (Agile, Waterfall, hybrid), required certifications (PMP, CAPM, PRINCE2, CSM), tools and software proficiency (Jira, MS Project, Smartsheet, Asana, Monday.com), stakeholder management responsibilities (internal vs. client-facing), and reporting structure. Include the number of concurrent projects the PM will manage and whether this is a pure PM role or involves hands-on technical work. Risk management, budget tracking, and vendor management experience should be explicitly listed if required, as these signal seniority level. The JD should also clarify whether there is a PMO structure in place or if the PM will be building processes from scratch.

What is the average project manager salary in the US in 2026? +

Project manager salaries in the US in 2026 range from $65,000 for junior roles to $145,000+ for senior program managers. Junior PMs (1–3 years, no PMP) earn $65,000–$85,000. Mid-level PMs (4–7 years, PMP or Agile certifications) earn $85,000–$110,000. Senior PMs and program managers (8+ years, managing portfolios or large enterprise projects) earn $110,000–$145,000. IT project managers in tech, finance, and healthcare typically earn 15–20% above the national average. PMs with PMP certification earn a median of 20% more than their non-certified counterparts according to PMI salary surveys. High-cost-of-living cities like San Francisco, New York, and Seattle add an additional 20–30% premium.

How do I write a project manager job description that attracts top candidates? +

Effective project manager JDs describe the scale and complexity of projects, not just generic "plan and execute projects" language. State budget sizes, team sizes, and project timelines. Top PMs want to know about organizational maturity: is project management well-established with clear processes, or will this person be building the PM function from scratch? Include the ratio of strategic planning versus administrative work. Experienced PMs are often frustrated by roles that are administrative coordination rather than true project leadership. Clearly state whether the role requires industry-specific knowledge (construction, IT, pharma, finance) as this is a strong filter. Mention whether there is a PMO and what the career growth path looks like from PM to senior PM or program manager.
