How to customize this CFO job description
1. State your company stage with actual metrics
CFO candidates evaluate opportunities like investors. Share your current ARR, growth rate, burn rate, and runway. If you're raising, state the timeline. If you're PE-backed, say so. If you're preparing for an IPO in 24 months, that's one of the most compelling data points in the JD. CFO JDs that omit financial context attract a broad, undifferentiated applicant pool — which wastes everyone's time at the executive level.
2. Be explicit about capital markets responsibilities
Capital markets experience is the highest-value CFO competency and the hardest to find. If this CFO will lead a fundraise, manage a credit facility, or navigate an M&A process, state it clearly as a requirement. CFOs with capital markets experience come from investment banking, PE-backed companies, or prior CFO roles involving transactions. Without this requirement stated explicitly, you'll attract operationally strong controllers who lack the fundraising skill the role requires.
3. Describe the CEO and board relationship
CFOs want to know the quality of the CEO partnership and the sophistication of the board. Include the board composition (VC-backed, independent directors, PE sponsors), reporting cadence, and the degree of finance influence in strategic decisions. A CFO who will sit at the executive table with real strategic input is a different opportunity than one who is primarily managing accounting and reporting. Be honest about the actual influence level.
4. Clarify team building vs. team management scope
A CFO inheriting a 2-person accounting team needs to be a builder — someone who has set up finance infrastructure from scratch. A CFO inheriting a 20-person finance org needs to be a manager and optimizer. These require different experience profiles and leadership styles. State the current team structure clearly, including direct reports, and whether this CFO will need to build the function significantly or primarily manage and improve what exists.

Frequently asked questions
What should a CFO job description include? +
A CFO JD should cover company stage and size, capital markets and fundraising agenda, board composition and reporting cadence, M&A and transaction responsibilities, finance team structure, FP&A and strategic planning ownership, treasury and risk management scope, and the CFO's decision-making authority. Company stage is the single most important context — it defines whether this is a builder, scaler, or optimizer CFO role.
What is the average CFO salary in 2026? +
CFO salaries in the US in 2026 range from $175,000 for startup first-finance-hire roles to $350,000+ for public company or large enterprise CFOs. Series A–B startup CFO base: $175,000–$250,000 with significant equity. Growth-stage CFO ($10M–$100M ARR): $250,000–$300,000. Public company CFO: $300,000–$350,000+ base with total comp frequently reaching $750K–$2M+ including RSUs, bonus, and LTIPs.
How do I write a CFO JD that attracts top candidates? +
Top CFOs evaluate opportunities like investors. Share your current ARR, growth rate, burn rate, and runway. State your fundraising timeline if one exists. Describe the quality of the CEO partnership and board composition. CFOs who have navigated a Series B, debt facility, or PE sale will self-identify when the opportunity is clearly described. Generic CFO JDs attract an undifferentiated pool of applicants who waste everyone's time in early screening calls.
